Like the Yin-Yang, Eastern Martial Arts and Western medicine are two halves of a whole. My mission is to preserve the ancient mind-body tools and pass them on to you.

Ramel to teach at 2013 ThyCa Thyroid Cancer Survivors' Association on Sept 28, 2013

Rami will be teaching at this year's 2013 annual Thyroid Cancer Survivors' Conference in Philadelphia.  His two sessions are titled: Feel Stronger, Better and More Relaxed with Qigong and Tai Chi and will be taught on September 28th.

Given Rami's extensive work with cancer patients and others with serious diseases, Rami's purpose is to help thyroid cancer patients and their caregivers learn some mind-body therapies that combine meditation, deep breathing techniques along with gentle movements with the goal of improving their daily lives.

ThyCa is the largest thyroid cancer survivors group in the world and attracts attendees from around the world.  There will be over 100 sessions during the 3 day conference, providing current research and opportunities for patients to meet and learn from each other.  The sessions are led by leading thyroid oncologists, surgeons, endocrinologists, nurses, patient advocates and caregivers.

After being asked to teach at this year's conference, Rami said: "I've devoted my career to understanding and researching the ways that Qigong and Tai Chi can help cancer patients improve their mental and physical health, so being at the ThyCa conference will allow me to do the kind of teaching that I love the most.  It is an honor to be invited".

Gary Bloom, Executive Director of ThyCa commented: "We are delighted for Rami to be joining us this year in Philadelphia.  We pride ourselves on bringing the top medical experts in the field of thyroid cancer to the conference, and now we are bringing in one of the world's experts in a very important and needed area as well".

If the NIH National Center for Complementary Medicine believes in the health benefits of Tai Chi and Qi Gong for Health shouldn't you?

The Federal Government through the National Center of Complementary Medicine (NCCAM) is rigorously researching Tai Chi and Qi Gong to help people become healthier.  They are looking at the benefits to gain strength, reduce pain, improve balance and many, many more chronic and other conditions.  If the Federal Government is taking this seriously, shouldn't you?

I was reviewing my twitter feed yesterday and did a search under the hashtag #taichi and was pleasantly surprised when I saw a video from the Federal Government about the health benefits of Tai Chi and Qi Gong.  I was pretty excited.

NCCAM is a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that performs rigorous research on various complementary and alternative medicine therapies and interventions.   They want objective truth about what works.  In a world filled with false promises with fewer and fewer objective outlets, isn't it great to know that the federal government is still doing this very important work?

They produced this short video which begins with the Director of NCCAM giving an introduction to their mission.  This introduction is followed by a short demonstation of Tai Chi and Qi Gong. While the video is worth watching and is informative, the instructor is not nearly as effective as Rami is.  I know I'm biased because I've trained with Rami for a number of years no, but I think you will agree.  While she demonstrates the moves just fine, she doesn't provide the enthusiasm and deep knowledge that Rami does.

Here is my suggestion.  Watch the NCCAM  video first and then take a look at Rami's online course (many of the lectures are free to try)  and I think you'll agree.  Rami doesn't just teach the tai chi form, he teaches you how to breath deeply, how to mediate, how to "be" what you are learning and performing.

Rami with leading researchers at Tufts Medical Center have done a number of clinical trials funded by the NIH that do show the benefits of Tai Chi.  Perhaps his best known trial looked at Tai Chi and Fibromyalgia.  The results of that study were published in the New England Journal of Medicine and featured in the New York Times.  He's also worked on a clinical trial looking at Tai Chi and Rheumatoid Arthritis with excellent results.

If you are a weekend warrior, a seasoned athlete or someone dealing with a chronic disease such ast cancer, arthritis, fibromyalgia or many other illnesses, you should give Tai Chi and Qi Gong a try.  You don't have anything to lose.

Objective Research to Help You Improve Your Health

I love to read and learn about ways to improve one's health.  During my 10 year Thyroid cancer journey, I have particularly come to enjoy practicing Tai Chi, Qi Gong, meditation, long meditative stretching and other mind-body prescriptions designed by my great teacher, Ramel (Rami) Rones.

I subscribe to various news feeds looking for objective research that help to sort out fact from fiction with respect to the benefits various mind-body techniques.  I thought I’d share some of the recent articles that I’ve particularly enjoyed.  At the bottom of this list, I have also shared some of my favorite projects.

I will plan to send a new list every month or two.

Hope you find this list interesting.

One of my favorite projects
In my town of Lexington, MA, I am involved in a project called ACROSS Lexington. The goal is to create 40 miles of walking, running and biking trails that traverse the entire town of Lexington.  We are doing this for 2 reasons.  First, to provide a new recreational asset for the town. In particular, we’d like to get residents and visitors enjoying nature more.  Second, are creating an alternative transportation system to help people rely on their cars much less.

We will also be having our first annual Lexington Bike Walk ‘N Bus week from May 5, to May 11.  Rami is even going to teach a class on the last day!
