Originating from the Taoist Tai Chi philosophy, Tai Chi Chuan uses the circular Yin and Yang symbol to demonstrate the interconnection and harmony of things which seem to be opposite. Tai Chi follows a natural flow from one thing to the next, balancing action and reaction, and can be a moving mediation.
The health aspects of Tai Chi come from what is known as Qigong (Chi Kung). I study Chi Kung in order to fully discover my inner body, and to understand the vital bioenergy, which allows the cells in the body to function. The connection between my mental awareness and inner body allows me to direct my body's energy smoothly; to manifest Qi energy for martial arts, to raise my spirit and to coordinate my movements skillfully. Without an understanding of the internal aspects, my training would be shallow and my results would fade as my body aged. However, by training internally, age will not take away all that I have struggled to develop. Chi Kung involves detailed study of the body's anatomy and energy system, a study of massage, and meditation.
